Plattsburg UCC Kitchen/Fellowship Area Remodel

Home / Kitchen History

Week 5 - March 27, 2011 (no Gallery pix)

This was a relatively quiet week. There were no contractors working in the area except for the electrician. That is not to say there were no surprises. The biggest and somewhat unsettling surprise was the fact that the electric service into the church has never been grounded. Today’s standards, by both the electrical inspectors and Ohio Edison, require grounding before any structure is allowed to have electric service. How this situation was allowed and how we have avoided a major problem is a mystery to all concerned, but we are thankful the issue was discovered and is now corrected.

Here are the activities and highlights of this past week.

  • The electrician finished the new service box and accompanying wiring and work. It was a very, very difficult job. He worked many days and hours to get it done.
  • Jason Rittenhouse spent most of two days and part of another doing outstanding masonry work to repair the very large hole created by the installation of the new electrical service box.
  • Don Ireland, Gary Aldridge, and Richard Flax reconfigured the storage area to allow easier storage of the tables and chairs plus they installed the first layer of new flooring at the parking lot entrance. The final layers will be put on next week right before the flooring company begins to put in the new floor.
  • Dale Paugh and the project designer came to inspect the area and take final measurements. They are beginning the process of constructing the new cabinetry and cutting the new counter tops. He was quite pleased with what has been done and the potential for a nice facility when complete.
  • The flooring company is scheduled to begin their work on Monday. They are going to put down the vapor barrier to protect the new floor from moisture coming up through the floor. That is an extra $5,000.00, but it was included in the original budget, so it will not come out of the "Over Run" category.

HELP NEEDED

The following is a list of work that will need done to complete the project. Also listed is the tentative date of the activity.

  • Shampoo carpets in the hallway, office, entry area, etc. - April 22-23
  • Paint touch up, trimming, paint inside of closets, etc. - April 11-14
  • Move a piano from upper hall to fellowship area - April 11-15
  • Cleaning & dusting of all church areas - April 22-23
  • Removing, wash and reinstall light fixture covers - April 11-15
  • Mop & wax all newly installed floors - April 23
  • Move Fellowship area furnishings from the nursery to the area - April 11-15

Please review the duties and dates. Beginning next week, there will be a sheet for you to sign up to be a part of the renovation process. It is our hope that everyone who is able will sign up for at least one area.

Week 6 - April 3, 2011 (no Gallery pix)

This week was set aside for the flooring company to install the new two component epoxy floor. As you recall, when the original proposal was brought to the congregation for approval, there was a $5,000.00 cost for vapor barrier included in the figures. At that time, it was unclear whether we would need that on the section of the floor under the Peters Addition. The company was to set up a test mechanism to determine whether we actually needed the vapor barrier. After observing a slight amount of moisture seeping up through the seam where the old concrete joins the new, the Trustees decided to save the cost of the test and install the barrier as a safety precaution against ruining the new floor. This does not change the total cost of the project because this expense was included in the initial bids, with the hope it wouldn’t be needed.

There were some “unexpected” situations this week. One that affects our bank balance is discovering the need to remove the door and threshold at the parking lot entrance in order to properly install the epoxy floor. This, of course required concrete removal with a mini jack hammer!! The Trustees had the replacing of that door on the long term improvement list for this year, but now it is necessary to move it to the “do it now” list. As you may have noticed, the bottom 4 inches of the door is gone and a temporary barrier to keep out the rain and cold is in place. We are researching the cost and logistics of getting a new door installed.

The other “surprise of the week” was the flooring company had planned on using two days to remove the tile, the old adhesive, and grinding the floor smooth. The adhesive was made up of a formula that was extremely difficult to remove. It defied two different chemicals and they finally resorted to using large hand held grinders to clear the surface for grinding. The result is that the two day job took all week! Barring other delays, the new floor should be in by the end of next week and be cured out by the beginning of the following week. Because we had built in a two week window for such unexpected situations, the overall project remains on track to be finished by Easter Sunday, but we cannot afford many more “surprises”.
